"Miss Steifel!" The teacher's voice echoed off the empty halls, but Renata ignored it. She ran, her hands shaking, holding back the anger that was boiling up in her. She hated this school, she hated the people, she hated the teacher, and most of all, she hated herself. Ren ran at top speed away from the classroom, just needing to get away.
All this hate and anger was caused mostly by the other students. Since Ren had only arrived at Forks Academy about a month and a half ago, she was very far behind the other students. The headmaster had been confident she would be able to catch up, so instead of putting her in with the first years, or given a tutor to help her catch up, she was plopped, completely unprepared into a fifth year class. Now, utterly confused and lost, Ren was at the bottom of the class, and was teased by the other students as being dumb and a Mudblood, even though she was half-and-half. And then some of the boys who were the biggest jerks found out about her being a werewolf. The jokes, taunts and pranks got even worse, and Renata's not-so-great temper had come close to snapping one too many times.
And now it finally had. She had had a note chucked at her, calling her an array of inappropriate names, most having to do with her background. That had been the final straw. She had jumped up, dangerously close to phasing, shouted at the jerk muffins responsible, then fled the room, to angry to speak. Once she was a sufficient distance away, Ren crouched, wrapping her arms around her knees, trying to stop the violent tremors that shook her. She knew she couldn't phase at school, but with her fragile temper, it was so tempting.

Kareem had just come out of his Astronomy class and was walking down the hall to the cafeteria. He smiled and waved at everyone who he passed, because he knew almost everyone in the school. he was just about to turn a corner when he noticed someone shuddering in a corner. He thingyed his head, wondering why he didn't recognize the person. He shrugged, she must be new. He walked over to her and crouched down next to her, "Um, hello, are you alright?"

Ren's head jerked up at the sound of the voice, so close to her. She had been focusing all her energy on not going wolf-girl that she hadn't noticed the tall young man come up next to her. She sucked in a deep breath, trying hard to remain calm. God, why did she of all people have to be given an incredibly short temper? She had always been like this- even before she phased for the first time. She was always getting into fights with Tris and the boys. And after she had gone wolf, any little thing would set her phasing. She wrecked seven good pairs of jeans that way. She was trying to get a hold on her temper, but it really wasn't working. Now she looked at the guy and rolled her eyes. "NO!" She snapped.

Kareem's smile had wiped off his face at the force of her answer. It had greatly surprised him that such a sweet-looking girl had been so snippy. He sat down next to her and shrugged, "Well, I have some techniques you can try to help with that anger-management problem."

"I do not have an anger management issue!!!" She snapped, incredibly angry that someone should assume that about her. God,people were so judgmental. Everyone was always judging her, forming opinions before they got to know her, and stereotyping. It drove Ren crazy. Then she realized what she had said to this guy. Oh, wait....... "Oh, Christ, I do have an anger management issue, don't I?" She asked, feeling miserable and angry and upset all at once.

Kareem was once again overwhelmed by the anger of the girl. He nodded when she realized that she had anger problems. He didn't say anything because he didn't want to get yelled at again, his ears were ringing. "Well, care to tell me what's on your mind?" He smiled again.

Ren looked up, shocked. "What?" Her tone changed from before. Now she was just plain surprised, and a bit vulnerable. This guy had just offered to listen to what was on her mind; that was actually pretty nice...in a creepy sort of way. That certainly wasn't something that happened every day, and she was surprised to find someone who was selfless like that. She looked at him, taking in his expression. It surprised her to find that she thought he was cute. She hadn't felt that way about a guy since....no, don't go there. Don't let yourself think about Jude, and how happy you were and what happened to him...too late. The pain of those memories flashed through her, and she was sure her expressive eyes gave her away. Her bitter mood returned, but she wasn't quite as angry. Now she was just annoyed. "Not really. I'm not really in a 'spill-my-guts-to-a-stranger' mood." She muttered.

Kareem noticed the sadness in her eyes for a split second. Then her armor went back up and locked him out. Jeez, this girl was hard to talk to. He wished that she would just say what was wrong, it would help her feel better, he was sure. He sighed and shook his head. Then smiled and turned back to her. "Well, then. Let's not be strangers!" He held out his hand to introduce himself, "I'm Kareem. And you are?..."

Renata looked suspiciously at Kareem as he held his hand out. "Um...Nata Steifel," she said, tentatively taking his hand and shaking it. She realized that she didn't actually mind having someone introduce themselves to her. She had been here for a while, and Kareem was one of the few people who had actually politely introduced themselves. A tiny bit of her anger evaporated. But just a tiny bit. "So, any specific reason you care about the worries and troubles of random teenage girls?" She asked, trying to keep most of the sarcasm out of her voice.

Kareem wondered why Nata seemed so untrusting, "Nata...Is that short for something?" He smiled, thinking how pretty a name it was. He pulled a cherry sucker out of his bag and a grape. The grape one he unwrapped and stuck in his mouth. The other he offered to Nata as he answered her, "It's not so much the 'worries and troubles of teenage girls'," He said, using air quotes, "It's just that I have an impulse to help whenever I see someone who looks down on their luck." He shrugged, "And take the sucker, it'll make you feel better."

Renata sighed. It wasn't that she disliked her name, she actually loved it, but it was a tad odd. "It's actually Renata Juniper, but I really prefer to go by Nada or Ren." She said. "You're sort of obnoxiously curious, you know that right?" She asked. Ren wasn't trying to be rude, she just felt like the guy should know. "Well, that's incredibly kind of you. It's not often you meet someone so freaking selfless." She didn't say it in a cruel way, but she wasn't singing his praises. Again, it was a simple statement of fact. At least, that's what Ren was trying to convince herself. She had absolutely no reason to like this guy, but somehow found herself a little drawn to him. She took the sucker, and moodily shoved it in her mouth.

Kareem thought about the name. Renata....Renata... "Hmmm....That's German, right?" He smiled. He didn't know that because he spoke so many languages, it was just one of those random facts that he picked up here and there. He was positive he'd met someone named Renata before, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He thingyed an eyebrow, "Well, I prefer to think of myself more as friendly and talkative rather than obnoxious. He laughed at how Renata put the sucker in her mouth. "Anyway, you never told me what was wrong."

"Yeah, it's German...my dad was German, born and bred. He met ma when he was studying in Seattle, and, well...here I am," she said with a small smile. For some reason, she was starting to calm down. It was like this Kareem guy had a calming effect on her. Kind of like Jude...nutse, thought we'd promised not to think about him. With a sigh, the sadness was back. "Friendly, yeah...a little overly friendly, but whatever," she said. Then he asked again what was wrong. "Well...I'm not exactly the best witch in the school, since I've never picked up a wand since like, three months ago, plus I'm a...werewolf, and you wouldn't believe the number of times people can use the term b*tch in their crude jokes. As you have seen I'm not the best at controlling my anger, so when these guys in Potions started passing me stupid notes I kinda...lost it a little bit," she muttered dejectedly.

Kareem smiled. "So are you from Seattle then?" For a moment it looked like Renata was calming down, but then she tensed again, like she was gripped by an overwhelming sadness. Kareem had always been good at guessing how someone feels, and that's what he was sensing from Renata. He didn't reply to her comment about him being overly friendly, otherwise he was sure that would just go on and on. He listened quietly to her explanation and when she was done, he offered, "Well, I could tutor you. I know a girl who's even more new than you, and she came to me for help recently with her studies. I'm sure it would help greatly with your magic, and therefore the teasing." He didn't hide his disgust when she mentioned the guys in her potions class. He greatly disliked people like that.

Ren shook her head. "Naw, I'm from Forks. Ma just went to school in Seattle, cause it was close by." She licked the sucker, surprised at how good it made her feel. Not happy, per say, just better. Then Kareem mentioned tutoring. Ren's jaw dropped. "Really? You'd...you'd do that for me?" She asked, shocked and even a little skeptical. But Ren could tell he was serious. She could also tell that he was disgusted at the guys from potions. It felt strange to have someone worry about her like that and be protective, in a way. Tris had always been a typical protective older brother, but he had also gone along with his friends in teasing her and daring her to do stupid things. "That would be great," she said, the anger completely gone from her voice. "Thanks."
